Builders skips

Builders skip hire

FJL Waste Services supplies builders skips from 4 to 12 yard to builders, trades and contractors across London, Surrey and the Thames Valley, usually delivered the next day. The 6 and 8 yard skips are the standard builders sizes, the 4 yard suits heavy rubble and small jobs, and 10 to 12 yard maxi skips take bulky, lighter waste. If the skip has to sit on the public highway we apply for the council permit for you.

Builders skip sizes and what each suits
SkipHolds aboutGood for
4 yard (midi)30 to 40 bin bagsSmall bathroom or kitchen refits, garden clearances, heavy soil and rubble
6 yard (builders)50 to 60 bin bagsBuilders' rubble, brick and concrete, small extensions and strip-outs
8 yard (builders)70 to 80 bin bagsThe standard builders skip: mixed construction waste from refurbs and renovations
10 to 12 yard (maxi)90 to 120 bin bagsBulky, lighter waste such as timber, packaging and office or shop fit-out strip-outs
Bag counts are approximate. Heavy materials such as soil, hardcore and concrete reach the weight limit before the skip is full, so they go in a 4 to 8 yard skip. For sustained volumes we supply 20 to 40 yard roll on roll off.

What can go in a builders skip

  • Rubble, bricks, blocks, tiles and concrete
  • Soil and hardcore, in a smaller skip because of weight
  • Timber, doors, skirting and flooring
  • Metal, pipework and packaging
  • Kitchen and bathroom strip-outs, minus the items below
  • Plasterboard, kept separate from mixed waste, so tell us when you book

What cannot go in

  • Asbestos
  • Paint, solvents, oils and other liquids
  • Batteries, electricals and vapes
  • Fluorescent tubes and gas bottles
  • Tyres

These need separate compliant disposal, which we can arrange alongside the skip. See hazardous waste collection.

Skip permits

A skip on your own drive or site needs no permit. A skip on the road or pavement needs a permit from the local council, and some councils also ask for lights and cones at night. We apply for the permit when you book and our drivers know each borough's rules. For a sealed, lockable option on a public-facing site, ask for an enclosed skip.

FAQ

Skip hire, common questions

What size skip do I need?

It depends on the job. A 4 to 6 yard skip suits smaller clear-outs and heavy materials like soil and rubble, while 8 to 12 yard skips suit bulkier mixed waste from refits and fit-outs. For sustained site volumes a 20 to 40 yard roll-on roll-off is more efficient. Tell us what you are clearing and we will recommend the size.

What size is a builders skip?

The standard builders skip is 6 or 8 yard. A 6 yard holds roughly 50 to 60 bin bags and suits rubble, brick and small strip-outs; an 8 yard holds roughly 70 to 80 and is the usual choice for mixed waste from refurbishments. We also hire 4 yard skips for heavy materials and smaller jobs, and 10 to 12 yard maxi skips for bulky, lighter waste.

Can I put soil and rubble in a builders skip?

Yes. Soil, hardcore, brick and concrete are what builders skips are for, but they are heavy, so a load fills the skip's weight limit long before it reaches the top. For mostly heavy waste choose a 4 to 8 yard skip rather than a maxi, and keep it level with the rim.

Can plasterboard go in a builders skip?

Not mixed in with everything else. Plasterboard has to be kept separate from general and mixed waste, so tell us when you book if the job will produce it and we will advise how to load or collect it.

Do you sort the permit if the skip goes on the road?

Yes. If the skip has to sit on a public road rather than your own land, a council permit is required, and our drivers know the local rules and handle it for you. On private land no permit is needed.

How quickly can you deliver a skip?

Usually next day across the patch, and same day is often possible if you call early. We run our own fleet locally, so we are not waiting on a national depot.

Should I choose an open or an enclosed skip?

Open skips suit muck-away and general bulky waste. Enclosed skips have a lockable lid, which keeps waste contained and tamper-proof on busy, shared or public-facing sites. We supply both.

What cannot go in a skip?

Hazardous items such as batteries, electricals including vapes, fluorescent tubes, tyres, asbestos, paint and liquids cannot go in a general skip, and a contaminated load is usually rejected and charged for. They need separate compliant disposal, which we handle: FJL is Environment Agency upper tier registered as a carrier, broker and dealer, collecting WEEE, batteries, lamps and aerosols direct and arranging asbestos, clinical and bulk chemical streams. Tell us what you expect to find and we will set the hazardous collection up alongside the skip.

Do you offer bigger containers than skips?

Yes. For sustained high volumes we supply roll-on roll-off containers from 20 to 40 yards, swapped on demand, which work out cheaper per tonne than repeated skips on busy sites.
