Hazardous waste collection for business

Hazardous waste cannot go in your general bin or your skip, and it does not move on an ordinary waste transfer note. FJL is Environment Agency upper tier registered as a carrier, broker and dealer, so we collect the everyday hazardous streams ourselves and arrange the specialist ones. One contact, one set of consignment notes, one audit trail.

  • Upper tier registered
  • Consignment notes raised and filed
  • Classified against the List of Waste

Registration

FJL Recycling Ltd holds Environment Agency registration CBDU91900, upper tier, as a carrier, broker and dealer, valid until 7 March 2028. Upper tier is the registration hazardous waste requires.

Check the record on the Environment Agency register. Your Duty of Care as the producer does not transfer, so verify any waste company before you hand anything over, including us.

What we collect, and what we arrange

Some hazardous streams need a contractor licensed or permitted specifically for them. Rather than send you away to find one, we arrange it and stay the single point of contact. Here is the honest split.

We collect this

On our own registration, on a scheduled or on-call round.

  • WEEE and used vapes

Electrical and electronic equipment, from office IT and small appliances to disposable vapes. Lithium batteries make vapes a fire risk in a mixed bin, which is why they are collected as their own stream.

  • Batteries

Loose and packaged waste batteries collected in dedicated containers, kept out of general waste and mixed recycling where they cause bin and vehicle fires.

  • Fluorescent tubes and lamps

Tubes, compact fluorescents and discharge lamps. They contain mercury, so they are collected whole in purpose-made containers rather than broken into a bin.

  • Aerosols and paint tins

Part-full aerosols, paint tins and similar small containers from maintenance, cleaning and refurbishment work.

We arrange this

Through contractors permitted for the stream. Booked, managed and documented by us.

  • Asbestos

Most asbestos removal is licensed work under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. FJL arranges a licensed contractor and the permitted disposal route, and keeps the paperwork with the rest of your waste records.

  • Clinical waste and sharps

Clinical, offensive and infectious waste, and sharps, are handled under HTM 07-01 by contractors permitted for those streams. FJL arranges the collection and the containers.

  • Bulk chemicals, solvents and oils

Drummed or bulk chemical, solvent and oil waste needs a carrier equipped and permitted for that class. FJL sources it and manages the consignment.

  • Fridges and cooling equipment

Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units contain controlled refrigerant gases that must be recovered by a competent operator before the unit is treated.

How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us what you have

A photograph and a rough quantity is usually enough. If you are not sure whether something is hazardous, that is the normal starting point, and it is the part most businesses get wrong.

  2. 2

    We classify it properly

Waste is classified against the List of Waste, which decides the code, the paperwork and where it can legally go. Getting the code right is what makes the rest of the chain valid.

  3. 3

    Collection is booked

Streams we collect go onto a scheduled or on-call round. Streams that need a permitted specialist are arranged by us, so you still deal with one company.

  4. 4

    You get the paperwork

Hazardous movements travel on a consignment note, not an ordinary waste transfer note. Copies are filed and produced on request for audits and inspections.

FAQ

Hazardous waste, common questions

Does FJL collect hazardous waste?

Yes. FJL Recycling Ltd is registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer under CBDU91900, which is the registration hazardous waste requires. FJL collects WEEE and used vapes, waste batteries, fluorescent tubes and lamps, and aerosols and paint tins directly. Asbestos, clinical waste and sharps, bulk chemicals and solvents, and fridges and cooling equipment are arranged by FJL through contractors permitted for those streams, so you keep one point of contact and one audit trail.

What counts as hazardous waste for a business?

Anything harmful to human health or the environment: solvents, oils, paints, aerosols, batteries, fluorescent tubes and lamps, most electrical equipment, fridges and air conditioning units, clinical waste and sharps, asbestos, and many cleaning and laboratory chemicals. Waste is classified against the List of Waste, and some items are hazardous only above certain concentrations, which is why classification is the first step rather than an afterthought.

What paperwork does hazardous waste need?

Hazardous waste moves on a consignment note rather than an ordinary waste transfer note, and you must keep your copies. In England, businesses producing hazardous waste have not needed to register their premises with the Environment Agency since April 2016, but the consignment note requirement and your Duty of Care did not go away. FJL raises the consignment notes and files copies against your account.

Can hazardous waste go in a skip?

No. Asbestos, batteries, electricals including vapes, fluorescent tubes, tyres, paint and liquids cannot go in a general skip, and a contaminated skip usually means a rejected load and a charge. Those items are collected as separate streams instead. If you are clearing a site and expect a mix, tell us in advance and we will set up the skip and the hazardous collection together.

How is FJL's registration checked?

FJL Recycling Ltd holds Environment Agency registration CBDU91900, upper tier, as a carrier, broker and dealer, valid until 7 March 2028. It is a public record and can be checked directly on the Environment Agency's waste carriers, brokers and dealers register. Always check any waste company's registration before you hand over hazardous waste, because the Duty of Care liability stays with you as the producer.
