Confidential waste collection and document destruction

The moment confidential paper goes in a normal recycling bin, you have a UK GDPR problem rather than a waste one. FJL puts locked containers on your site, collects them sealed under chain of custody, destroys the contents and sends you a certificate of destruction. Across London, Surrey and the Thames Valley, independent for 13 years.

  • Certificate of destruction every collection
  • On-site shredding available
  • Baled and recycled, never landfilled

Short answer

FJL collects confidential waste on a schedule or as a one-off purge across London, Surrey and the Thames Valley, with locked consoles on site, an on-site mobile shredding option for sensitive work, and a certificate of destruction after every collection. Regular rounds run through Twickenham, Richmond, Uxbridge, Kingston, Ealing, Hounslow and Wimbledon from a depot in Uxbridge.

How it works

  1. 1

    Containers go in

Locked consoles, wheeled bins or sacks, sized to how much paper you actually generate. Usually on site within the week.

  2. 2

    Staff use them

Confidential paper goes through the slot. The container stays locked at all times, so there is no window where the material sits loose.

  3. 3

We collect under chain of custody

Sealed and taken to a secure facility for destruction. For sensitive work we bring a mobile shredder and destroy it in your car park instead, with you watching if you want.

  4. 4

    You get the certificate

A certificate of destruction with the weight, date and method lands after every collection. That is the audit trail if the Information Commissioner ever asks.

Locked console

Sits in the office like a piece of furniture. Staff post paper through a secure slot and cannot get it back out. Emptied on your schedule.

Lockable wheeled bin

For higher volume sites, archive rooms and purge work, where a console fills faster than the round comes.

Secure sacks

For one-off clear-outs, office moves and sites where a console does not fit.

Who we do this for

The common thread is regulated personal data and a statutory retention schedule that decides when paper has to go.

Solicitors and legal

Seven year file purges, closed matter archives and routine daily output. The retention schedule decides the volume, so most firms run a scheduled console collection with an annual purge on top.

Schools and academies

Pupil records, safeguarding files, staff HR and exam material, destroyed against the retention schedule. Term-time collections and a bigger clear-out in the holidays is the usual pattern.

Accountants and financial services

Client files, payroll and regulatory disposals where the certificate of destruction is part of the compliance record rather than a nice-to-have.

Healthcare and dental

Patient records and appointment material under retention rules, kept separate from clinical waste, which is a different stream with different paperwork.

Offices and property

Estate agency files, HR records and the archive room nobody has opened since the last office move. One-off purges and scheduled consoles both work.

Confidential waste sits alongside the rest of your collections. If you already have bins with us it goes on the same account and the same invoice. See business waste collection and hazardous waste.

FAQ

Confidential waste, common questions

What is confidential waste?

Any material carrying personal or commercially sensitive information: client files, personnel and payroll records, patient or pupil records, financial paperwork, contracts and anything with names and addresses on it. If it holds personal data, putting it in a normal recycling bin is not secure destruction, and UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 require appropriate security right up to the point of destruction.

Do I get a certificate of destruction?

Yes. Every collection comes with a certificate showing the weight of paper destroyed, the date and the method. That is your audit trail for UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and any sector regulator who asks for it.

What is the difference between on-site and off-site shredding?

Off-site is the standard service. Paper goes into locked containers on your premises, we collect them sealed, and the material is destroyed at a secure facility under chain of custody. On-site means a mobile shredder parks at your premises and destroys the paper before it leaves the site. On-site costs more and suits higher security work, but you can watch it happen.

Can I book a one-off shred instead of a regular collection?

Yes. Archive clear-outs, office moves and seven year file purges all run as one-off jobs. Tell us the rough volume, in archive boxes or cubic metres, and you will get a clear price back the same day.

Do you cover confidential waste collection in Twickenham and Uxbridge?

Yes. Twickenham, Richmond, Uxbridge, Kingston, Ealing, Hounslow and Wimbledon are all on regular rounds, and we collect across London, Surrey and the Thames Valley from a depot in Uxbridge. Send a postcode and a rough volume and we will confirm the service and the collection day.

What happens to the paper after it is shredded?

It is baled and sent for recycling at a UK paper mill. Shredded confidential paper does not go to landfill.

Is secure shredding required by law?

Destroying confidential paper securely is not optional if you hold personal data. UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 require appropriate security measures for personal data right up to destruction. A normal recycling bin is not appropriate security, and the Information Commissioner has issued penalties for that exact failure.

Can you destroy hard drives or other media?

Paper is the main destruction service. For hard drives, magnetic tape and other media we will tell you straight if a specialist partner is the right call, rather than promising something the kit is not built for.
