Simpler Recycling in Slough
Simpler Recycling in Slough.
Slough is one of the densest commercial waste districts in Berkshire, anchored by the Slough Trading Estate, which covers more than 480 acres and houses over 400 businesses including a significant data centre cluster. Add the Queensmere Observatory shopping centre, the High Street and the businesses serving the Heathrow corridor, and SL1, SL2 and SL3 together generate one of the largest single-town commercial waste volumes in the south east. Simpler Recycling caught most of that base on 31 March 2025 for businesses with 10 or more full-time staff. The setup is three separated streams: food waste, dry recyclables and general waste, with paper and card kept apart from plastic, metal and glass unless your collector signs off a co-collection assessment. FJL has been collecting across Slough for years and the Trading Estate is one of our largest single service areas. 28 years experience, with the depot a short run away from the SL postcodes, and most new customers find us cheaper than what they had before.

About Slough
What makes Slough a Berkshire hotspot.
The Trading Estate is a different proposition to a typical town centre under Simpler Recycling. Most occupiers are large enterprises well over the 10 FTE threshold, and many already run sophisticated waste segregation for operational reasons. Data centres, food manufacturers, distribution operators and corporate offices all sit alongside each other, with very different waste mixes. The data centre cluster is interesting under the regulation because the building-side waste is mostly office and packaging, but the operational equipment lifecycle generates large WEEE volumes that are handled separately under existing electronic waste rules. We work tenant by tenant across the estate and we are happy to assess what is in place against the Simpler Recycling baseline and add what is missing.

FAQ
Common questions about simpler recycling in Slough.
We are a logistics operator on the Slough Trading Estate. What changes for us under Simpler Recycling?
If you have not separated food waste from your general waste, that is the headline change. Logistics operations often have a canteen or breakroom food waste stream that has historically been thrown in with general waste. That has to be separated now. Dry recyclables and residual continue much as before, with paper and card in their own container by default.
Are data centres on the Slough estate caught by Simpler Recycling?
Yes. Data centres operate as commercial businesses and the same rules apply. The building-side waste (office, packaging, breakroom food) needs the three separated streams. Operational equipment such as decommissioned servers continues to be handled under existing WEEE rules and not under Simpler Recycling.
How does FJL handle multi-tenant collections on Slough Trading Estate buildings?
We co-ordinate with building management and the individual tenants to schedule shared service yard collections that work for the whole building. The three separated streams can be run on shared bins where the tenants are happy with that, or split per-tenant where they prefer. Either works under the regulation provided the segregation is clean.
