Who must comply
Who has to separate their waste, and when.
Since 31 March 2025, businesses and other workplaces in England with 10 or more full time equivalent employees must separate their waste into three streams:
- Food waste.
- Dry recyclables. Paper and card, plus plastic, metal and glass, which may be collected together.
- Residual waste. What is left over, your general waste bin.
Micro-firms with fewer than 10 full time equivalent employees have until 31 March 2027. The rules are enforced by the Environment Agency.
If your business only has a general waste collection today, it is likely to need at least one more stream. For the full detail of the rules, see Simpler Recycling explained.
What the review covers
What we check, and what you get back.
Tell us about your business and your bins. We do the rest and put it in writing.
- 1
Your bins today
We look at the containers you have now and what actually goes in them, so the review starts from your real waste rather than a standard package.
- 2
The streams you need
We tell you which streams Simpler Recycling requires for your workplace: food waste, paper and card, mixed plastic, metal and glass, and what is left as general waste.
- 3
Container sizes and frequency
We suggest a container size and collection frequency for each stream, based on how much you produce and how often.
- 4
Duty of care paperwork
We check you have waste transfer documentation for every stream, and set it up on your account for anything new.
- 5
A written quote
You get the recommendation and the price in writing. Nothing changes unless you say yes.

FAQ
Free waste review, common questions
Do I need to comply if I have fewer than 10 staff?
Not yet. Micro-firms with fewer than 10 full time equivalent employees have until 31 March 2027. Headcount is counted across the whole business, not per site, so several small branches can add up to 10 or more. Businesses with 10 or more full time equivalent employees have had to comply since 31 March 2025.
What waste streams do I need under Simpler Recycling?
Food waste, dry recyclables and residual (general) waste, kept separate. Paper and card is collected on its own by default. The review tells you which of these you already have and which you still need.
Can plastic, metal and glass go in the same bin?
Yes. Plastic, metal and glass may be collected together as one mixed stream. Paper and card should be kept separate from them by default.
Is the waste review really free?
Yes. There is no charge for the review and no obligation to take any service. You get a written recommendation and quote, and you decide what to do with it.
How long does a waste review take?
Not long. A review is usually a short phone call or email exchange about your bins and your business, after which we send a written recommendation and quote. Where a site visit helps, we arrange one at a time that suits you.
What happens after the review?
We send you a written quote for the streams you need. If you go ahead, we deliver the containers, add the collections to our rounds and put the duty of care paperwork on your account. If you are already an FJL customer, the new services are added to your existing account.
